The term “Millennial” is one that is bound to elicit a response from almost anyone. From articles and interviews colouring Gen-Y’s as not much more than ne’er do well, narcissists, to the research that points out the fact that these collaborative workers are the biggest generation to date, one cannot avoid some pre-conceived biases when thinking of Millennials in the workforce.
No matter what you may personally feel, Millennials are the future of work. So how do we create environments that a workforce can thrive in? And how can we best utilise the skills of this tech savvy generation to the best of our, and their capabilities?
While previous generations may prefer in person meetings and conversations, having a stable office environment, and process to follow, which has historically made the introduction of new systems (particularly technological) and processes a difficult pill to swallow for them. Millennials by contrast thrive in environments where meetings occur in a digital space, and collaboration happens through technology, across the globe.
Never before has there been a generation so at home working on a global scale, from remote offices. Nor has there been a generation so at home with rapid change. As a generation raised on constant change and improvement in the technology (that many accuse of running their lives) change is a constant that many Millennials require in order to feel fulfilled.
With the apparent ease of incorporating change and reducing office costs, while improving collaboration, why is it that Millennials seem so needy? The answer is because they are a generation that wants instant feedback, and praise for a job well done.
If we follow traditional business models where wheels of HR can turn slowly, and there is not much collaboration, one can understand the Millennial frustration. But by making small changes in how we already use technology, we can keep our young workforce happy and productive, while reaping the benefits of working with them.
